What’s is a US Consulate interview?

Every US Visa Applicant is required to visit the US Consulate for an interview. At the interview you will have your fingerprints taken and your Consulate interviewer will ask you a few questions about your motivations for moving to the US. It’s quite a nerve wracking process for a lot of our J1 Visa applicants but when it comes down to it – there really isn’t much to be worried about!

Why do I have to do it?

The consulate interview is an important part of the US visa application process because it is the US’ first opportunity to vet their visa candidates in person. Through their interviews the Consulate agents are able to identify any risky applicants at an early stage of the visa process! It means that the US remains a safe place to live and work for all of our J1 visa applicants.

When can I do the interview?

Consulate appointments take place on a Tuesday and Thursday at the US consulate in Auckland. At the moment consulate appointments are fully booked out until the beginning of August. This is a real problem for people who are wanting to travel around or before then!

Why is it taking so long!?

There are number of reasons it is taking so long to book an appointment. It simply comes down to supply and demand! There aren’t enough agents and timeslots available at the consulate to handle the amount of people that are wanting to book interviews. A big portion of the demand is coming from young Summer Campers from all across New Zealand that are wanting to travel to the US for 8-10 weeks to become camp counsellors for kids in Camps in the US. Unfortunately there isn’t much we can do about the high demand of people wanting appointments and low amount of available appointments!

When will I be able to travel?

The earliest we can get you to the US for your J1 Visa start date at the moment is likely to be September. We definitely don’t recommend booking your flights until you have booked in your appointment with the consulate because anything can change! If your eligibility for the J1 visa runs out before August or September – please get in contact with us to see if there is anything we can do for you!

What should I do about this?

To make sure that you can get your visa sorted before your J1 Visa eligibility runs out we highly recommend applying for the Work USA program as soon as you can to give yourself plenty of breathing room to get that sorted. You can apply for that on our website and all you need to do is pay your deposit of $295. That way we can get everything in motion to get you on your dream gap year nice and early!
